For the 153rd time — more than any other rivalry in college football — Lehigh and Lafayette will square off on the gridiron. If all goes well for the Mountain Hawks, polishing off their familiar foe will mean taking home the Patriot League title. Lafayette and Lehigh kickoff is set for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on MASN (live stream on Patriot League Network).

Despite a 4-6 overall record, Lehigh’s 4-1 conference mark has the Hawks in line to earn the league title and crash the FCS playoff bracket. The team started its season on an 0-5 skid but suddenly sits one win from a spot in the season-ending tournament. Lehigh has won when it’s mattered most, starting with a 41-38 win over Colgate, the other team atop the Patriot standings.

Lafayette’s season has been similarly rocky. The Leopards are 3-2 in conference play but 0-5 outside the league, which includes losses to Monmouth, Sacred Heart, and Princeton. But the pain of any losing season can be soothed with a rivalry game victory — especially if it’s the oldest one on the books.

Lafayette at Lehigh news:

The Mountain Hawks are 4-6 overall, 4-1 in the Patriot League and with a win over visiting rival Lafayette next week in the 153rd edition of college football’s most-played rivalry, they would repeat as league champs and return to the postseason.

Colgate is also 4-1 in the league after a 27-0 win at Lafayette on Saturday, but Lehigh holds the tiebreaker over the Raiders by virtue of a 41-38 win in Hamilton, N.Y., on Oct. 7.

Does Lafayette have an answer for Lehigh’s high-powered offense?

Mountain Hawks quarterback Brad Mayes ranks fifth in the FCS with 3,128 passing yards. Their star tailback, Bragalone, is third in the nation with 1,200 rushing yards in just 10 games. They’re the engine behind a top-five offense that’s put up at least 35 points in each of its five games. Lafayette, on the other hand, is giving up more than 360 yards per game this fall and is being set up as Lehigh’s latest victim.

Lafayette at Lehigh prediction:

I need a sub-.500 team in my bracket. Mountain Hawks by 12.
