Just a week removed from almost upsetting one of the few undefeated teams in the FBS, the Texas Longhorns will host the rival Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday at 8 p.m. ET on FOX (live stream).

Are the Longhorns finally back on the upswing?

Texas Tech is coming off a game that was a bit of a head-scratcher, as the normally offensive-loaded team failed to get into the end zone and only put up three points. On the other side of the ball, the Red Raiders were able to keep TCU from putting up more than 30 points — a real victory for that position group.
The Longhorns might not challenge the Red Raiders as much as TCU did last weekend, but Texas has flipped a switch and will give Texas Tech’s defense some trouble.

Texas Tech vs. Texas news:
- The Longhorns are definitely going bowling, it’s just a matter of where.
- Texas Tech was held to just three points last week, for the first time since 2006.
Nic Shimonek played his worst game by far going 17-of-33 for 137 yards and zero touchdowns. He constantly overthrew open receivers and had a fumble in the fourth quarter which effectively killed any chance of a comeback.
- Tom Herman is no stranger to a QB competition, and — despite some questionable decision-making — Sam Ehlinger will be the starter against Texas Tech.
After Ehlinger came in on the third drive of the game in Morgantown, Herman said that Buechele will likely receive the same opportunity on Friday. Whichever quarterback is playing at a higher level would then remain in the game.
- The Texas Tech defense was the star of the show in last weekend’s loss to TCU.
Broderick. Washington. Jr. That man was a monster on the line. Posting a career best seven tackles and constently pushing the vaunted TCU OLine on their heels. Eli Howard also did a great job of putting pressure on Robinson throughout the game and even though he got a RIDICULOUS roughing the passer call, he did let that phase him as he went on to record a sack and force a fumble out of the young freshman’s hands.
Have the Longhorns finally turned things around?
It was a tough few years for Texas fans, who under Charlie Strong hadn’t been to a bowl game since 2014 and couldn’t seem to gain any sort of momentum. After bringing in Tom Herman in the offseason, UT had big expectations for its new head coach and his team. After a start to the season that almost included some upsets, the trajectory of the team is already trending upward in the months Herman has been at the helm.
Heading into the final game of the season, the Longhorns are 6-5 and have already secured a bowl bid. Under QB guru Tom Herman, the team also has two quarterback options who (with some additional development) could each be a solid option to lead the team in the future. Sam Ehlinger has already proven he has the arm and talent to make big plays and lead his offense down the field, but his biggest hurdle will be making better decisions with the ball and limiting turnovers.
Texas Tech vs. Texas prediction:
Tom Herman’s team should have no trouble finishing getting a win on Saturday and ending the season 7-5. Keeping their momentum will be important for the Longhorns as they prepare for their first bowl game since 2014.
