The Arizona Wildcats (7-4) have rode Khalil Tate’s electrifying performances to a surprisingly strong season, and they’ll try go out in style when they face the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-5) in the Territorial Cup at 4:30 p.m. ET on Pac-12 Networks (live streams at Pac-12 Live and FuboTV).

Arizona has a historical lead in this in-state rivalry, with an overall 49-40-1 record. However, the Sun Devils have gotten the better of this meeting recently, having won four of the last seven games. Last year, Arizona got a 56-35 win and will try to do the same on the road this time.

Tate has been setting the Pac-12 on fire this season, but he had an off night against Oregon last week, throwing two picks and completing just 18 of 35 passes in a 48-28 loss to the Ducks. Still, the Wildcats have to be thrilled with their season, having knocked off Washington State as part of a four-game winning streak. Their 2017 performance almost certainly saved Rich Rodriguez’s job.

Arizona State has also surprised by reaching bowl eligibility this season, giving Todd Graham more of a cushion. Wins over Washington and Utah have contributed to a better-than-expected campaign, boding well for the Sun Devils’ 2018 outlook.

Arizona vs. Arizona State news

One of the huge reasons Arizona was able to dominate ASU last year was how they were able to vail their play calling.

We saw huddles for possibly the first time in the history of Rich Rodriguez-coached football, and we’ll probably see it again.

Coach Todd Graham is notorious for sign stealing, so this was the way Arizona came up with to thwart that, and it obviously worked. Will ASU be able to stop Khalil Tate, J.J. Taylor, and whoever else if they don’t know what’s coming?

Graham had a spectacular run when he took over for the Sun Devils, but perhaps he flew too close to the sun, providing fans unrealistic expectations he would eventually fall short of in the years to come.

He’s now succumbing to the same fate many ASU head coaches before him have created the blueprint for, and the same force that eternally rotates the coaching carousel for middling power five programs: mediocrity.

Arizona vs. Arizona State prediction

The Sun Devils have had a shaky defense most of the season, so if Tate starts off hot, this game could get out of hand in a hurry. That said, Arizona has its own flaws on the defensive end, so we could be in for an old-fashioned #Pac12AfterDark shootout. The Wildcats take the win on the final possession.
