Washington has jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the Apple Cup, due in some measure to the Huskies’ advantage in the field position department. Up 7-0 and staring down a fourth-and-6 from Wazzu’s 41-yard line, Washington quarterback Jake Browning brought the Huskie offense out on the field with the apparent purpose of going for the first down conversion. That there is a perfect 40-yard bomb to slam Wazzu back on their own 1-yard line. That’s Washington’s quarterback whipping off a nonchalant 40-yard pooch to pin the Cougars deep inside their own five.
Washington State would need just three plays after this to cough the ball up at their own 28 and hand matters back over to Washington, who promptly scored on a Jake Browning sneak to double the Huskies’ advantage.
That’s right: In the space of 2:28 game minutes, Browning pinned the Cougs on their own goal line then ran in a touchdown.
Even though it was drenching rain in Seattle, Washington was able to beat Wazzu 41-14 on Saturday night.
Washington State visited Washington for this year’s annual Apple Cup, one of the most wonderfully niche college football rivalries in the country. Washington won, but thanks to its loss to Stanford earlier this month, the Cardinal will represent the Pac-12 north in the title game.
