On two plays, Lane Kiffin’s FAU showed a varied offensive toolkit that bamboozled North Texas en route to a TD in the Conference USA Championship.

Kiffin cooked up two good ones here.

The common thread here is misdirection, but it’s the controlled chaos in the backfield that gets North Texas’ eye discipline get out of whack. On both plays you’ve got an offensive line as well as multiple backfield men in motion moving the entire formation one way.
On the first play, the real misdirection is in the backfield with the pitches and perimeter players in motion.
On the second play, FAU shows something similar but flips it on its head by adding the throwing element on the backside of a similar action to the play before. The WR at the top of the screen heading vertical clears out an entire side of the formation so the wheel route can be completely open. The wheel route has time to develop, and it’s deadly.
Kiffin’s got this offense humming, and they do a little bit of everything in the scheme Kiffin’s got rolling in only year one. If you’ve paid attention to Auburn this season, they hit both Alabama and Mississippi State with a similar play using similar wildcat action.
Offensive football’s about making the really simple look really complex. When those things come together and defenses take the bait it can be dangerous.
