‘Last Chance U’ star John Franklin III pulled off a DeSean Jackson fumble right before crossing the goal line

Don’t drop the ball before the goal line.

If you’ve watched the Netflix series Last Chance U, you’re probably familiar with John Franklin III. He’s the athletic QB who transferred to junior college from Florida State, then went to Auburn and has since transferred to FAU.

The Owls won the Conference USA Championship Game on Saturday. But this will go down as an all-time blooper for Franklin and FAU.

Franklin broke through North Texas’ defense on a zone-read and had a clear path to the end zone for an exclamation-point touchdown. Franklin then did what so many of his football-playing predecessors have done and dropped the ball before he crossed the goal line. The play was ruled a touchdown but overturned and became a fumble on review, and the Mean Green got the recovery. It was certainly the right call.

Here’s the definitive collection of these fumbles. Franklin now has his own place in the pantheon of Before The Goal Line Fumblers.
