Trailing 20-13 in the third quarter of the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve against Fresno State, the Houston Cougars muffed a kickoff return. Two guys tried to field it, and they ran into each other, and the ball fell, and Fresno fell on it at the UH 10.
Houston fumbled a kickoff at its own 10 and then scored on a block six almost immediately
College special teams!

Then Houston’s defense forced a three-and-out to bring up a chip-shot field goal. And then the Cougars got a very casual 94-yard blocked field goal touchdown return.
A game that could’ve easily been 27-13 was suddenly 20-20.
Houston’s two starting cornerbacks combined on this one. Jeremy Winchester slipped around the edge of Fresno’s protection and had a really easy time swatting the kick out of the air. (It looked like he was going to overrun it, which would have been hilarious.) Alexander Myres scooped it and cruised almost the whole field.
One of my favorite college football teams is erratic special teams. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen such a wide range of competence there in such a short time as right here. Going from dropping and losing a routine kickoff to block-sixing the other team in a span of four plays has quite possibly never happened before.
