You’ve seen the rollout-style punt before, in which the punter scoots toward the side and approaches the line of scrimmage before punting. Well, here’s one thing that can go really wrong, as demonstrated by Utah against West Virginia in the Heart of Dallas Bowl:
Hello. How are you? Would you like to watch a punter get sacked while trying to punt?
Here’s one risk that comes with rugby-style punting.

The rugby punt has a couple benefits.
Punting on the run can lead to more of a line-drive kick that’s difficult to field, rather than the usual booming skyscraper. The difference in hang time is partly accounted for by the delay in actually kicking.
And these plays sometimes involve reads for the punter. He might have the green light to take off and run, if he notices a lane for the first down.
The rugby punt also has a big risk or two.
One is getting sacked mid-kick like it’s damn Tecmo Bowl and the other team has 1989 Lawrence Taylor.
This only led to a field goal for the Mountaineers, FWIW.
