Well, this is a creative way to score a touchdown. In the third quarter of the Liberty Bowl between Iowa State and Memphis, the Cyclones took a 21-17 lead on a tipped touchdown pass that was caught in the back of the end zone by receiver Allen Lazard. Quarterback Kyle Kempt’s pass was tipped off his intended receiver’s hands, before Lazard caught it for the score.
Iowa State got lucky with this nifty tipped touchdown catch at the Liberty Bowl
This could’ve easily been picked off.

This play was reviewed to see if Lazard, who stepped out of bounds before making the catch, was the first to touch it — which would have negated the score. But after review, Lazard clearly was the second to do so, making it a legal catch. Lazard has scored nine touchdowns this season, and this one marks his first since the Cyclones’ Nov. 18 game against Baylor.
Kempt has now scored two touchdowns in this bowl game, and he’s thrown for 272 yards with a whole other quarter to go.
