Penn State’s mascot made a smooth catch at Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl against Washington. Look at this calm reception of the football into the midsection, and stick around for the happy celebration that surrounds the mascot afterward:
Penn State’s mascot makes iconic catch at Fiesta Bowl, thrilling cheerleaders and all of America
Look at this legendary snag.

I don’t think sideline catches are all that notable in and of themselves. They’ve got to feature good reactions around them, like this iconic scene:
Washington scored a touchdown one play later to make the score 28-21, Penn State. Mascots on the sideline do not count as players, which is a shame. (If any mascots want to sue for their rights as players, I know some lawyers.) But whomever was acting Penn State’s Lion mascot for this game will now have a lifelong memory.
The New Year’s Six bowls have been eventful for cheerleading squads. Previously at the Cotton Bowl, USC cheerleaders expertly continued to cheer while a large fight raged on several yards away from them. This episode was more memorable, though.
