The Liberty Bowl stage thought it could bear the weight of the mighty Iowa State Cyclones. It thought wrong!

The stage did not survive.

Iowa State beat Memphis in the Liberty Bowl on Saturday in Memphis, 21-20. The Cyclones completed a great turnaround season by moving to 8-5, with their highest win total since 2000. So they celebrated, as any team in their position would do:

And the stage broke.

I don’t know how many Iowa State football players were on this stage, but there are at least 15 or so just in the camera frame here. Assuming an average weight of 240 pounds per player, that’s 3,600 pounds on the stage just to start, not including any of their playing equipment, tables, trophies, or the like.

The stage made a valiant effort but couldn’t prevent the Cyclones from quickly plummeting toward the earth. It didn’t appear that anyone was injured, though some of them might be scared to stand on elevated platforms for a few days. It would be an understandable concern.

Previously, Big 12 foe Oklahoma had the same problem after a Sugar Bowl win in 2014:

It happens.
