The last time the Tennessee Volunteers were represented in the NFL draft, it was 2014. The Fast and Furious series was on its sixth movie.
The Tennessee Vols just had an NFL draft pick for the first time since *2014*
We just saw the Volunteers’ first pick since Germany beat Brazil in that World Cup.

Movie No. 7 came out before the Vols’ next pick.
So did No. 8.
In 2015 and 2016, every other program anywhere near Tennessee’s historic stature was represented. Out of 65 power schools, the only three others to lack picks in this period were Colorado (which was bad for a decade), Iowa State (whose draft history is amazingly terrible), and North Carolina (uhh, I dunno).
In 2017, Derek Barnett became the man to break the drought, going at No. 14 to Eagles.
The end of the Derek Dooley era further exposed a horrific shortcoming in UT’s recruiting, which Butch Jones has since patched up with four straight top-20 classes, but not before two straight drafts’ worth of comedy.
And oh, the comedy.
The following groups outproduced Tennessee — a six-time national champion and the alma mater of Peyton Manning, Reggie White, Jason Witten, and Eric Berry — in total picks over the previous two years:
- FBS mid-majors: 73 picks
- FCS teams: 35
- UT archrivals Alabama and Florida: 29
- Other Tennessee schools: Eight
- Division II teams: Five
- Non-scholarship teams in Division III or the Ivy League: Three
- The United States Naval Academy: Two
- United States Naval Academy long snappers: One
- Players guaranteed to not play for at least a season: One
- Second-round kickers: One
- FCS punters: One
- Baylor basketball players who hadn’t played football since middle school: One
- Canada’s Manitoba Bisons: One
- Germany’s Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, via YouTube: One
Even the Texas Longhorns, who were endlessly mocked for sitting out the 2014 draft, had six total picks in 2015 and 2016.
The worst is over, at least.
In 2017, UT sends three of the top 100 prospects and a handful of other candidates, including an interesting later-rounds QB. The Vols are assured of participating in their second draft of the College Football Playoff era.
Jones’ Vols haven’t exactly reached new heights and are unlikely to play for a national title any time soon. But the droughts are over, including back-to-back ranked seasons for the first time since 2007 and UT’s first win over Florida since 2004.
Speaking of 2014, which 2014 hit song feels like it came out the longest time ago? I can’t believe “Timber” by Pitbull and Kesha was released within the past decade, but that’s what the card says.
