Just a tad bit awkward.

On Wednesday, news surfaced that Old Dominion linebacker Derek Wilder was charged with a felony of eluding or disregarding a police officer while he was driving in Chesapeake, Va. on Thursday, May 18. According to the Virginian-Pilot, Wilder will appear in court come early July.

He was also cited for reckless driving and having no registration. Wilder appeared in General District Court for an arraignment hearing on Friday, May 26, but that was continued. He is slated to appear again in General District Court on July 11.

But there’s one slightly awkward part about this whole thing — Wilder is the son of Old Dominion head coach Derek Wilder. And on Wednesday, the head coach had to announce his son’s suspension from the team.

“Derek Wilder has been suspended indefinitely from the team.” Coach Wilder said in a statement to the Virginian-Pilot, and he added that he will have no further comment.

The linebacker redshirted his freshman season in 2015, and he played in three games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. He played both tight end and linebacker in high school, and he was listed as a three-star tight end per his 247Sports recruiting profile.
