In the midst of a blowout home loss to Georgia on Saturday, Tennessee had a punt doink into the top of someone’s head — a UGA rusher, I think.
College football gave us two punts blocked by helmets within 4 hours
It happens!

That’s a punt right into a dude’s helmet. A rarity!
And earlier on Saturday, in Greenville, N.C.:
It went in the books as a negative 5-yard punt.
This is not the most unfortunate punt of the college football weekend. That’s almost certainly a title that will stay with this Miami punt on Friday against Duke, which went backward without touching anything other than the punter’s foot and the ground:
But still, the punt at the top of this post — by ECU’s Austin Barnes against USF — will go into the pantheon of amazing punting things to happen this season.
Have you ever seen a punter boot the ball directly off one of his up-back’s heads before? I don’t think I have, at least not live. But it has happened. The most recent example that I know of is from 2014, when Nebraska had the same problem after a bungled snap.
Nonetheless! This is a rare enough event that there’s at least a chance you won’t see it repeated in 2017. Hopefully ECU’s special teamers can someday laugh about it.
