Texas A&M vs. South Carolina: Predicting the winner, plus start time and how to watch online

The Aggies broke back into the top 25 last week — and now they’ll get tested in Columbia.

Texas A&M got the biggest win of the Jimbo Fisher era last week when it dispatched then-No. 13 Kentucky at Kyle Field. Now the Aggies have to avoid a letdown game when they travel to the east coast for a showdown at 3-2 South Carolina.

A&M will hope its second game against a Palmetto State opponent will go better than its first. The Aggies staked their case for legitimacy in Week 2 when their comeback effort against No. 2 Clemson fell just two points short of the season’s biggest upset. Unfortunately for TAMU, that momentum didn’t carry over to a Week 4 showdown with No. 1 Alabama; the Crimson Tide easily dispatched Fisher’s team in a 45-23 win.

The Gamecocks haven’t had as brutal a schedule, but they’ve still been tested. Their 3-2 record includes loses to Georgia and Kentucky, and victories over Coastal Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Missouri (in a thunderstorm-marred slopfest) have failed to inspire much confidence. But beating a ranked A&M team would.

Texas A&M vs. South Carolina prediction:

A&M clocks in at No. 17 in the latest round of the S&P+ rankings. The Gamecocks are ranked 46th. The preseason predictor sees this one as a narrow loss for the home team. After the Aggies shut down a solid Kentucky defense last week, that sounds about right — along with the under (53).

Texas A&M vs. South Carolina news:

How will Jake Bentley look in his return?

The South Carolina quarterback missed last week’s game against Missouri, and while backup Michael Scarnecchia played admirably in his absence (249 yards, three touchdowns), Will Muschamp is ready to turn the reins back over to his early-season starter. Bentley hasn’t been especially impressive in 2018, throwing nearly as many interceptions (6) as touchdowns (7) and averaging just seven yards per carry. Could we see Scarnecchia return if Bentley’s still hobbled by his MCL sprain or, even worse, completely ineffective against the Aggies?
