Things got real chippy between Duke and Georgia Tech. Following a Georgia Tech kickoff, Yellow Jackets senior linebacker Victor Alexander was ejected for throwing punches after the play.
This Duke vs. Georgia Tech brawl included actual punches and everything
It wasn’t the first chippy moment from this game.

In the video below, you’ll see Alexander, No. 9, begin to go after some Blue Devil players shortly after he was pushed down onto the field as the kickoff was being blown dead. He threw punches after the whistle, and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and ejected.
Duke’s Jacob Morgenstern, No. 40, was also called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, but he was not ejected. It’s a little unclear when exactly the flag is thrown on Morgenstern, but there was a lot of shoving going on:
Here’s what the NCAA rulebook says about unsportsmanlike conduct, which includes punching and pushing players:
ARTICLE 1. There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct or any act that interferes with orderly game administration on the part of players, substitutes, coaches, authorized attendants or any other persons subject to the rules, before the game, during the game or between periods. Infractions for these acts by players are administered as either live-ball or dead-ball fouls depending on when they occur. (A.R. 9-2-1-I-X) a. Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:
1. No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage in such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to game officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited to:
[...]
Dead-ball contact fouls such as pushing, shoving, striking, etc. that occur clearly after the ball is dead and that are not part of the game action. (A.R. 9-2-1-X) (k) After the ball is dead, using forcible contact to push or pull an opponent off the pile. (A.R. 9-2-1-XI)
This wasn’t the only chippy moment during this game — earlier in the same quarter, Georgia Tech defensive back Avery Showell and Duke running back Matao Durant had to be separated by the officials after they scuffled a bit after a a punt return.
Phew, stay safe out there, guys.
