Maryland allows a touchdown I previously thought was impossible

It’s just an extraordinary train of events.

I went to Maryland, and I’m generally past the point of being surprised by unfortunate Maryland football moments. There are more important things in the world (and more important things going on with this team) than it allowing weird TDs. But the sequence of events leading to this Iowa touchdown is so extreme that it merits being noted here:

Trailing 16-0 and with all of about 50 yards of offense late in the third quarter at Iowa, the Terps briefly pulled struggling quarterback Kasim Hill and replaced him with backup Tyrrell Pigrome. They set a man in motion on some jet sweep action, a longtime staple of offensive coordinator and interim head coach Matt Canada’s.

Some things that are not supposed to happen are the motion man colliding with the QB, that collision causing a fumble, the QB then soccer-kicking the ball into his own end zone by accident, and the other team then recovering the ball for a freebie touchdown.

Another angle of this disaster:

Iowa was well on its way to a blowout win at home, despite averaging just 4.2 yards per play at the time of this Maryland collision/fumble/kick/self-TD. This was possible because the Terps were getting doubled up in time of possession and total plays run, and because they were averaging about 2.1 yards on the plays they had run.

It’s an offensive exhibition.
