Oklahoma State quarterback Taylor Cornelius has had a solid season. But the Cowboys have lost three games, and Cornelius’ numbers aren’t as big as Mason Rudolph’s were, so he’s been the subject of a decent bit of criticism in his first year as the starter.
Mike Gundy’s latest QB-defending rant includes fart noises and fiery Twitter takes
Find someone who will stick up for you like Gundy will stick up for an Oklahoma State QB who’s gotten criticized.
Cornelius was really good in OSU’s win against Texas on Saturday, though. He was 23-of-34 for 321 yards, three scores, and no interceptions, and his 176 rating was higher than in any other games this year except one against an FCS team and another against Kansas. He also had a couple of critical runs at the end of the game, to win it and then salt it away.
During Mike Gundy’s postgame press conference, a reporter started to ask him about the criticism the QB had faced this season.
“Criticism? From where?” Gundy asked.
Outside noise, the reporter responded.
“I don’t give a rat’s ass about Twitter,” Gundy said, then made a fart noise.
“It’s a platform for people that are sitting home drawing an unemployment check, sitting in front of a keyboard.” He made another fart noise, then cut off an unrelated question.
“I’m not disregarding what you’re saying. Trust me. I get it at my own house. I just kind of felt like that social media and Twitter is what’s destroying this country anyway,” he continued. “So that’s how I feel about it, from politics to sports, whatever. It gives people a platform to bitch, and then other people are, like, needling it, and they’re sitting at home and they’re late on a payment. So, anyway, that’s how I feel.”

This is Gundy’s most rip-roaring rant in a while. But, of course, it’s not the most explosive take he’s fired off during his years as OSU’s coach.
The loudest one was in 2007, and it, too, was about criticism of an Oklahoma State QB.
After the Cowboys’ 48-45 win over Texas Tech in 2007, Gundy wasn’t happy with a column from The Oklahoman about one of his quarterbacks, Bobby Reid, who was benched for sophomore Zac Robinson before the game.
”If you wanna go after an athlete, one of my athletes, you go after one that doesn’t do the right things,” he steamed after holding up the newspaper, with pages falling out. “You don’t downgrade him because he does everything right, and may not play as well on Saturdays. You let us make that decision.
”That’s why I don’t read the newspaper — because it’s garbage! And the editor that let it come out is garbage! Attackin’ an amateur athlete for doing everything right.
”Where are we at in society today? Come after me! I’m a man! I’m 40! I’m not a kid! Write something about me or our coaches. Don’t write about a kid that does everything right, that’s hard-spoken. And then say that the coaches said he was scared — that ain’t true!”
He ended the presser by saying, “That’s all I got to say. Makes me want to puke,” as somebody applauded.
Gundy did not suggest that newspaper readers were unemployed, however.
The coach used to be an Oklahoma State QB himself, so maybe he’s just naturally ultra-protective of Oklahoma State QBs.
I don’t know.
