No. 1 Alabama was having a world of trouble with No. 4 Georgia in the first half of Saturday’s SEC Championship. For a moment, it looked like that trouble had gotten worse. Then it looked like it was better, but then worse again, but then better again. Got that?
Bama lucked into an SEC Championship TD, but it was the right call
Josh Jacobs lost the ball but got it back with time to spare.

The scene: Bama handed off from Georgia’s 1 to running back Josh Jacobs, who fumbled while he lunged toward the goal line. Jacobs reached forward and picked up the ball, before Georgia’s J.R. Reed dove and whacked the ball away from him.
The Dawgs recovered for a touchback, or so it briefly appeared.
In reality, Jacobs had not only gotten the ball back, but gotten it back in the end zone and held it for long enough that officials reviewing the play called it a Bama recovery.
The funniest thing was listening to the Georgia fans in the crowd cheer when the referee announced Jacobs had fumbled, then hearing the Bama fans go wild when he continued his sentence with the words “recovered by Alabama,” as he signaled a touchdown.
Two things about this play are true at the same time:
- That’s the right call. Bama fairly cut its deficit to 21-14.
- Goodness, that is the luckiest thing I’ve seen all week.
