No, really, it’s true! Earlier this week, FAU head coach Lane Kiffin spoke highly of his team’s Week 1 opponent, the Oklahoma Sooners. He did so by comparing the Sooners to his former employer, Alabama:
Lane Kiffin wasn’t actually trolling the Tide this time!
He just stated a fact. A silly fact, but a fact nonetheless.

Plenty of people responded with the same thought: “Aw, man, Kiffin the troll master’s at it again!”
But remember how the final College Football Playoff rankings looked like at the end of the season last year:
Kiffin is just smartassedly stating a fact about his team’s next opponent: it technically ranked ahead of Alabama in the previous season’s final College Football Playoff rankings, and he’s ignoring what happened after those rankings came out.
OU is playing the Owls on the opening Saturday of college football (despite our personal efforts to get this game moved to the first Thursday night slate of games). Kiffin would like for people to watch that game, so who can blame him for jokingly using a fair assessment of the Sooners to get folks tuned in?
It’s easy to assume Kiffin, no stranger to trolling his past employers, is using that same tactic here. But let’s look at the context of his joke before we go directly to the trollmobile.
