Welp, Urban Meyer talked about rivalry success while feet away from Jim Harbaugh

The two were both at a high school football camp over the weekend.

College football rivalries last 365 days a year, and that holds especially true for The Game between Michigan and Ohio State. At a high school football camp over the weekend, OSU head coach Urban Meyer spoke about winning in rivalry games — with the head coach of his biggest rival, Jim Harbaugh, standing feet away from him:

Meyer is 3-0 against Harbaugh, and 6-0 total in The Game since he was hired as the Buckeyes’ head coach in 2012. Here’s what he had to say about rivalries, as transcribed by the Detroit Free Press:

“(When) Bill Belichick comes in (to talk about possible draft picks) he’ll ask me two very critical questions: What kind of teammate is he and how does he perform in the big game?” Meyer said. “He wants to know what kind of teammate you are, I’m the same way ... And how do you play in the big game?

”I want to see it in your rivalry game. I want to see it on fourth down, when the team needs you. Not when you’re running around in shorts and T-shirts doing vertical jumps. ... The big game, man. The big one. The one that matters. Not the one where you’re up four scores in the third quarter. I want to know (how it is) against your rival, in the big game, on fourth down when they need you the most. Can you give me your very best? If you do? Get ready for a big career.”

Meanwhile Harbaugh said this on Charles Woodson’s assessment about The Game:

The Harbaugh-Meyer rivalry has had its moments over the years. After OSU’s win in 2016, Meyer appeared to throw a jab while referencing Harbaugh’s weird love for milk:

Meyer’s talked about his wife sending him on errands after games, before. Mrs. Meyer said this moment was unintentional.

A backstory — the two have dueling opinions on milk. In September 2016, Harbaugh called out Meyer when Dan Patrick informed him that Meyer drinks skim milk. In fact, Harbaugh responded by saying that Michigan refuses to drink skim, or “candy-ass milk.”

In 2017, when Meyer was asked about his relationship with Harbaugh he said:

“OK, very professional, very respectful, it probably stops there.”

Between rival head coaches, there’s always going to be some chippiness. I’m just waiting till we get these two in the octagon to hash it out once and for all. Although my money’s still on Harbaugh.
