Move over Miami, Tulane has a Mardi Gras-themed turnover chain

Allow the Green Wave to introduce you to the turnover beads.

You may remember Miami’s turnover chain from last season. The Cuban Links got draped around the neck of any Canes player who managed to notch a takeaway in a game. Well, Tulane has its own version, and they’re Mardi Gras beads.

This is perfect for the New Orleans-based school, and in a long line of sideline props for college football teams. Like Miami’s chain, Tulane’s beads are very appropriate for the city’s aesthetic because the beads are an integral part of Mardi Gras festivities.

During the late 1800’s, inexpensive necklaces made of glass beads began to be tossed into the crowds by the parade krewes. The beads were an instant hit among the crowds of New Orleans residents and visiting Mardi Gras tourists. It is believed that a man dressed up as Santa Claus was the first person in a New Orleans parade to use the beads in his costume. Other tourists soon followed his lead and they began to decorate themselves with the bead necklaces.

Turnovers are largely luck, but let’s hope that we get to see the beads as much as possible this season. It’s a much better attempt at turnover neckwear than what Oregon did last season.
