WMU’s field goal net banner ad is in just the worst possible position

This is not an efficient use of ad space.

Western Michigan has some advertising on the net it uses to backstop field goals and extra points. That’s common in college football, where pretty much every inch of the field and stadium is subject to sponsorship to make money schools won’t share with their players.

But I really feel like WMU should rethink the positioning/alignment of this banner:

A still, if you’d rather not watch the video above:

There are two problems with this, each somehow more obvious than the other:

  • I can read that the ad banner is for something called ARBOR, but I can’t read whatever the smaller print is beyond that. Maybe people elsewhere in the stadium can, but if you’re buying an advertisement on field goal netting, you’re sort of banking that people are going to see it when they watch the telecast. But I shouldn’t harp on the capitalist element of this; ad-buyers are free to spend their money however they want, even if that means spending healthy chunks of change on banners the largest audience segment can’t see.
  • Oh, and this is the moment the ball gets kicked on this play:

Whatever this company is, I now resent it for blocking my view of this crucial kick.

WMU is within its rights to have this banner up and facing the wrong direction and also have broadcasters use this exact camera angle for kicks into this end zone, but yeah: It would probably be best to do just one or the other at a time!
