Cam Newton’s brother Caylin had another huge game to start the season

A year after leading one of the biggest upsets ever, he put up even bigger numbers in a close loss against a better opponent.

Last season, Cam Newton’s brother Caylin — who is the quarterback for the Howard Bison — stole the attention of the college football world in their season opener.

Then in 2018, the younger Newton reminded everybody of his 2017 heroics. Newton had one final drive against the Bobcats with a minute and 56 seconds to go. The Bison were leading 22-10 in the first half as 31-point underdogs. The upset alert sirens were spinning.

Newton made some plays on the final drive, but ultimately couldn’t pull out the victory. However, it was still a solid performance by Newton — he finished the game with 439 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and two picks. On the ground, he had 93 yards and another touchdown.

Caylin’s done this before

He put a scare into the FBS Bobcats — a team significantly better than the UNLV squad he beat last season. Ohio came into the season as MAC East favorites. Regardless of the loss, Newton’s performance was a reminder.

The Bison took on UNLV in the 2017 opener, where Newton had 140 yards passing and 190 yards on the ground.

It was the biggest upset in college football history.

Newton finished the 2017 season with 3,185 total yards and 25 total touchdowns. He never quite matched the hype he had from the start of last season, but his opening victory last season was also legendary.

Caylin will probably never become what Cam is, and that’s not a burn on the younger Newton. His brother is just that good.

But his efforts are still worth highlighting. He’s received recognition on the preseason watch list for the 2018 Black College Football player of the year.

Newton is still just a sophomore, and has showed that he can compete against low-FBS opponents. As he gains more experience, there’s a chance he could pull off another upset. And we won’t be as nearly as surprised as we have been in the past.
