Week 4 of the college football season brings us a highly-anticipated ranked matchup between the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal and No. 20 Oregon Ducks. The game is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC (live streaming via WatchESPN).

Oregon is playing its fourth consecutive home game, after winning big over Bowling Green and then Portland State. They dominated those games, but it was a bit closer against San Jose State, with Oregon notching a 35-22 victory.
Stanford, on the other hand, hasn’t put up 50 points like Oregon, but they’ve beaten a ranked opponent in then-No. 18 USC. That was a 17-3 victory for Stanford, and they followed it up with a 30-10 win over UC Davis.

- Stanford and Oregon have a good rivalry, but it’s been awhile since it’s been at its height. It’s nearing 2012 levels again, though, writes Rule of Tree.
It’s 2012, and the Cardinal heads to Autzen Stadium in mid-November for the conference deciding game. The Stanford-Oregon game has decided the conference championship since 2009 and have become the must-see game in the PAC-12. The rivalry has garnered national attention, and College Gameday is on scene for the showdown, which Stanford ultimately wins in overtime 17-14.
Fast forward six years. College Gameday is back, but this time, the game isn’t clearly for the conference crown yet. The game is earlier in the year, but with both teams starting off hot, it’s the game to watch in college football this week.
- The Cardinal are still figuring things out, such as the placement of Osiris St. Brown on the depth chart and his role on the offense. He could wind up being a difference-maker.
Oregon pretenders?
The Ducks are 3-0 and ranked 20th in the nation, but they have what is widely considered to be one of the easiest non-conference schedules in all of college football. They aren’t being tested, but the Cardinal should test them early and often. There are some real talented players on Oregon’s roster, but as a team, their identity isn’t really known to the wider college football audience. Not yet.
Stanford vs. Oregon prediction
In the latest S&P+ rankings, Oregon has 11.3 points, down a few spots from last week, while Stanford comes in at 12.8 points, moving up quite a few places. This suggests a 1.5-point differential on neutral ground, with Stanford favored. It will be an Oregon home game, so it gets a little tougher to predict there.
