TCU didn’t have the juice to hold on and topple Ohio State in Week 3. Have the Horned Frogs recovered enough to handle Texas on the road?

Gary Patterson’s team overcame early mistakes to take a 21-13 third quarter lead over OSU in one of the season’s most-anticipated games, then watched the fourth-ranked Buckeyes assert their will in the second half of a 40-28 loss. That put a chip on the Frogs’ shoulders — and likely put them one loss away from missing out on their shot at a College Football Playoff bid.

The Longhorns would love to be the team to ruin that dream. Texas’ 2018 started much like its 2017 — with an upset loss to a not-very-good Maryland team. The two weeks since have featured back-to-back wins, including a Week 3 triumph over then-No. 23 USC in a rematch of the 2006 Rose Bowl. If they can roll that momentum into another big home win, it could be the key to regaining UT’s spot in the top 25.

TCU vs. Texas news:

On the biggest stage, with the brightest lights, Robinson put forth the best effort of his fledgling career, matching the Buckeyes blow for blow and proving he can play at a high level. Though a trio of mistakes will be what many remember, it was his response to those moments that stood out to me, and to his coach. “Well, the best thing that I saw, sometimes young players, they get glazed over. When things bad happen to them, their eyes glaze over. That never happened to Shawn.” And it didn’t.

What does Shawn Robinson have in store for Texas?

TCU’s first-year quarterback had flashes of brilliance in last week’s loss to Ohio State, but underwhelmed in big moments against the best defense he’s seen as a starter. He finished the game with 308 passing yards, but also threw a pair of interceptions — including a backbreaking pick-six that gave the Buckeyes a lead they wouldn’t relinquish — and ran for only seven yards on eight carries.

He’ll need to be better against a Texas team that kept USC passer JT Daniels out of the end zone last week. Daniels eventually got to 322 yards, but he needed 48 passes to get there. A similarly inefficient performance from Robinson could make it two straight losses for the Frogs.

TCU vs. Texas prediction:

This is a tight one, especially with Robinson’s performance remaining unpredictable. S&P+’s preseason pick tagged TCU for a 0.7 point loss. If a rebounding Longhorn team can perform up to expectations, TCU-Texas could be the best game of the entire Week 4 slate.
