Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray did not start on Saturday against Baylor because he was late to practice on Friday, ESPN and various other outlets reported.
Oklahoma suspended Kyler Murray for 4 offensive plays, more than Baker Mayfield got in 2017
Lincoln Riley lays down the law.

Murray’s de-facto suspension lasted one drive, which amounted to four offensive snaps. The Sooners punted after that, and Baylor fumbled the kick away at its own 10. Murray was back on the field after that, and two plays later, he threw a touchdown to Lee Morris.
This was a longer suspension by offensive plays missed than Oklahoma’s QB got last year.
Baker Mayfield earned what amounted to a two-play suspension late in 2017, after various hijinks during a game at Kansas the week prior. Murray made the start in place of the Heisman winner that day. Murray led a two-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, and Mayfield was back on the field the next time Oklahoma’s offense was.
Murray threw another TD the next time Oklahoma had the ball, making the score 14-0 and putting his four plays off even further in the rearview.
In this case, the punishment — missing a little football — fit the crime, which also amounted to Murray missing a little football. Everything seems OK now, thankfully.
