2012 College Hockey schedule: Top-ranked Minnesota faces tough test

College hockey will have five ranked games on display Friday evening. Here’s a rundown on the entire slate of matchups.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Minnesota head coach Don Lucia has his team sitting at 18-4-4 through 20 weeks of the regular season schedule, sitting atop the rankings with 30 first-place votes. When Friday night arrives, the Golden Gophers will be faced with yet another tough task to remain in their current No. 1 spot.

The eighth-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies are unbeaten in WCHA play. They haven’t lost a game since Jan. 5. That winning streak will be in jeopardy when Minnesota comes to town this weekend. Two games lie ahead for the Huskies to prove their skill against the nation’s top team.

After splitting their last series against Minnesota Duluth, the Golden Gophers hit the road looking to regain their winning form. Minnesota is 1-1-1 over the last three game. The puck drops in St. Cloud at 8:35 p.m. ET.

No. 3 Miami at No. 6 Western Michigan, 7:05 p.m. ET

The Redhawks have won five straight games, most recently outscoring Alaska 10-3 in a two-game series. The Broncos battled Ferris State to a tie last Saturday, with the Bulldogs gaining an extra point by winning the shootout 2-1. Both teams sit with the same record (17-6-5) heading into Friday night.

No. 7 North Dakota at No. 14 Nebraska-Omaha, 7:35 p.m. ET

Nebraska-Omaha sits well below North Dakota in overall points, but the Mavericks hold a few notable victories on their schedule this season. UND is just 2-3-3 since the Subway Holiday Classic.
