The West Indies squad is a continuation from the one that played in Bangladesh, with only one replacement – injured Lendl Simmons paves the way back for Adrian Barath. Led by Darren Sammy, they will look to go in with a similar strategy as before – two pace bowlers, one medium-pacer in Sammy, a frontline spinner, Devendra Bishoo and Marlon Samuels to back the spin department.
If Darren Bravo can maintain his form, while Samuels scores the runs in the country where he was earlier wanted in connection with the match-fixing case, West Indies will be a formidable unit.
West Indies squad for India Tests:
Darren Sammy (captain), Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh (wk), Devendra Bishoo, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Kirk Edwards, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Shane Shillingford
India has made some interesting changes to the side. MS Dhoni hasn’t been given a break from the Test series, while Praveen Kumar has been rested. Harbhajan Singh is dropped and in his place comes R Ashwin to lead the spin attack along with Pragyan Ojha. Rahul Sharma is a surprise selection.
The batting will see most of the stalwarts make a comeback, but who gets to bat number six will be a big question – Yuvraj Singh or Virat Kohli. Yuvraj looks a good choice for now. Ishant Sharma could partner Umesh Yadav in the pace bowling department.
India probable XI for first Test:
M S Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav.
