The Indian Premier League team of Kolkata Knight Riders will need to look out for a new coach as their head coach Dav Whatmore has decided to call it quits from the position. Whatmore, who is said to be a favourite to take over the role of the national coach of the Pakistan cricket team, was two years into the role with the Knight Riders.

The Pakistan board have asked Whatmore to visit Pakistan to discuss the finer points in his contract and the KKR management have allowed Whatmore to end his contract earlier than planned.

According to the KKR CEO, Venky Mysore, the management had been supportive of Whatmore’s decision to coach a national side. He said, "We have been most supportive of Dav's keen interest in pursuing an international coaching role and wish him the very best. His decision to resign is to ensure that Kolkata Knight Riders are able to plan for the transition and we thank him for that. We also thank him for all his contributions over the past two years"

Whatmore’s first season with KKR ended in a sixth position of eight teams before he guided them to a top four finish in a ten-team tournament.

The former KKR coach said, "The team has progressed in the right direction and as always, I wish the team continued success and look forward to them progressing to silverware in 2012."

Pakistan have been on a lookout for a coach ever since Waqar Younis quit the job citing reasons related to health. Pakistan chief selector Mohsin Khan has done the job for some time now.
