The first season of the Bangladesh Premier League will start from February 2012 with six teams taking part in the competition. It will be a round-robin-based format, followed by knock-out matches in the end.

The Bangladesh Premier League, or BPL starts from February 9 with the final to be played on February 29. All matches will be played at Dhaka and Chittagong.

The six teams participating in the tournament will be the franchises bought over at the auction, and are Dhaka Gladiators, Barisal Burners, Chittagong Kings, Duronto Rajshahi, Khulna Royal Bengal and Sylhet Royals.

Each team will play each of the others twice, to form 30 round-robin games. The top four teams in the points table at the end of the league stage will play in the semi-finals. This will be followed by the final.

The team auction to decide on which companies won the rights for the franchises was held on January 10 while the player auctions happened on January 19.

There will be some days on which there will be two games played in the competition as well and in such cases, the first match will begin at 2.30 pm local time (8.30 am GMT). This will be followed by the second match of the day at 6.30 pm local time (12.30 pm GMT).

Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi was the highest-paid cricketer in the auction, won over for $700,000 while Chris Gayle gets $551,000 for his selection.
