Indian middle-order batsman Virat Kohli was fined by the ICC for his middle-finger gesture at the Sydney crowd. The incident occurred on the second day of the second Test match between India and Australia.

Kohli was photographed showing the middle finger to the crowd and later took to Twitter to vent out his frustration. He said that while he understood he erred in taking on the public, it made no sense for the crowd to abuse his mother or sister.

Later, English middle-order player Kevin Pietersen consoled him on Twitter by saying that the Australian crowds would turn abusive on their own cricketers if they did not do well.

Pietersen said, “ha ha ha ha ha!!! Welcome to Australia buddy!!”

Kohli then replied, “never heard crap like that. EVER”.

Later Pietersen commiserated by speaking of how the Australian fans went after their own cricketers as well.

The match referee, Ranjan Madugalle fined Kohli half of his match fee after laying a level two charge against the middle-order batsman.

Kohli has been under tremendous pressure this series after failing in all three of the innings he has batted so far. He will come out to bat on the fourth day with the Indians still needing 354 runs to make Australia bat again in the second Test match and with only eight second innings wickets remaining.
