After the announcement of a jail sentence for the former Essex cricketer, Mervyn Westfield, the spotlight has again turned on to a Pakistani cricketer for his alleged role in spot-fixing. Danish Kaneria, a Pakistan leg-spinner, has been named as an alleged go-between Westfield and the match-fixers by the accused.
Focus On Kaneria After Westfield Sentencing
Danish Kaneria could be under the spotlight after Westfield named him the alleged co-conspirator in the spot-fixing case.

Westfield was jailed for four months for accepting money in return for conceding a set number of runs in the over. His lawyers named Kaneria as the man who introduced him to the world of spot-fixing although the Pakistani cricketer has denied the charge.
Kaneria, who was named the captain of his first class side, Sind, will continue to lead the team and the Pakistan Cricket Board has released a statement that while they were dead against spot-fixing or any form of corruption, Kaneria was innocent till proved guilty. A PCB spokesman said, “We do maintain zero tolerance toward corruption, but since nothing is yet proven against the cricketer the status remains same as it was so he will continue to play the final as captain.”
However, the PCB has said that they will support the English cricket board in whatever way possible if they decide to hold an enquiry around the same.
PCB’s legal advisor Taffulzul Rizvi has said that the PCB will cooperate with the ECB given that it was a Pakistani player who was involved in the case.
Kaneria had been cleared by the Essex police when Westfield was questioned in 2010 and the leggie has maintained his innocence ever since. It remains to be seen whether he will agree to go to England to be a part of the enquiry if the ECB demanded it.
