Tour de France champion and Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins is in the hospital after being hit by a van on Wednesday. It is believed that Wiggins broke several ribs and suffered hand and wrist injuries as well, although police did not give any details.

Wiggins, the 2012 Tour de France champion and a four-time Olympic gold medalist, was reportedly hit by a van in Wrightington, near his home in Eccleston, while cycling. Wiggins was hit as the van was pulling out of a gas station. Garage attendant Yasmin Smith said Wiggins was in a lot of pain and added, “he (Wiggins) said he thought he had broken his ribs.”

His pro cycling team, Team Sky, posted on its website “We can confirm that Bradley Wiggins was involved in a road traffic accident whilst riding his bike near his home in Lancashire on Wednesday evening.”

He is being kept in hospital overnight for observation but the injuries he has sustained are not thought to be serious and he is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.

We will announce more details in due course.

The 32-year-old Wiggins also won a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics, a gold, silver and bronze in 2004, and two golds in 2008, all in track cycling events. Police would not comment on if his wounds would pose a threat to his competitive cycling career.
