Jan Bakelants won the second stage of the 2013 Tour de France on Sunday afternoon, edging Peter Sagan and the rest of the peloton by one second as he crossed the finish line in Ajaccio.

With the win, Bakelants claimed the yellow jersey for the RadioShack-Leopard team. The 27-year-old Belgian cyclist led most of the 156 kilometer journey from Bastia to Ajaccio, although he did show signs of fatigue down the stretch.

His win was somewhat of a surprise; despite being a professional cyclist since 2009, Bakelants has yet to win a race. It will be interesting to see how much he has left in the tank for Monday’s 145.5 kilometer ride to Calvi with the rest of the peloton now aiming for his yellow jersey.

Bakelants won the second stage in three hours, 43 minutes and 11 seconds. Sagan was the runner-up with Michal Kwiatkowski coming in just milliseconds behind him. Davide Cimolai and Edvald Boasson Hagen placed fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the top-five from Sunday.

Full results can be found at the Tour de France’s official site.
