Tour de France 2013 results, Stage 14: Matteo Trentin takes glory

Trentin finished with a stage victory after a tight sprint finish.

In the 14th stage of the 2013 Tour de France, Matteo Trentin of Italy earned a victory by sprinting to the finish ahead of the pack.

Trentin, an Omega Pharma-Quickstep team member, came across the finish line well ahead of the peloton. However, Great Britain’s Chris Froome remains in the lead heading into the final week of competition.

The win by Trentin ended Italy’s three-year drought of not enjoying a stage winner in the world’s most famous cycling race. Trentin had to give it his all down the stretch to outlast Julien Simon, Switzerland’s Michael Albasini and American Andrew Talansky, three solid sprinters in their own right.

Trentin was overjoyed with the outcome on Saturday morning in the town of Lyon, France, talking to Eurosport.com after the stage was completed.

“Yesterday we worked so hard for Mark and so today I tried to conserve my energy on the climbs,” said Trentin. “But it wasn’t easy towards the end with Simon’s attack. I thought we had missed our chance.”

“It’s the fourth stage win for my team and the first for an Italian this year and for three years so I’m really happy,” he added.

On Sunday, the riders will continue their trek toward Paris on Bastille Day, the day of French independence.
