Tour de France 2013 results, Stage 16: Rui Costa wins

Rui Costa broke away from the field and won Stage 16 by a sizable margin.

Rui Costa of Portugal was victorious on Tuesday’s leg of the 2013 Tour de France, winning Stage 16 and earning the first stage victory of the Tour for his team, Movistar. The victory is Costa’s second career Tour de France stage victory and his first since winning Stage 8 of the 2011 Tour de France.

Costa, 26, broke away from the lead group with fewer than 20 kilometers remaining between him and the finish line, opening up a lead that was as wide as 45 seconds and remained as much in the final kilometers. The stage began in Vaison-La-Romaine and finished 168 kilometers later in Gap.

The stage, described by Chris Fontecchio of Podium Cafe as a “medium mountain stage,” was expected to be one that would crown the rider able to successfully break away from the peloton and group as Costa did.

After 16 stages, Chris Froome of Great Britain is still the owner of the yellow jersey, although he and Alberto Contador had a near disaster in the final kilometers of the stage. Both Contador and Froome entered the same corner together and got tangled, but both managed to stay upright.

Richie Porte helped pace the pair back to the lead group, where they managed to salvage solid finishes in the stage. The standings after 16 stages are as follows:

Place Rider Time Behind Leader
1 Chris Froome --
2 Bauke Mollema 4' 14"
3 Alberto Contador 4' 25"
4 Roman Kreuziger 4' 28"
5 Nairo Quintana 5' 47"
