Tour de France 2014 Stage 21 results and final standings: Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali wins race

Nibali won four individual stages on his way to the title.

Vincenzo Nibali became the first Italian to win the Tour de France since 1998 on Sunday afternoon in Paris. Nibali is just the sixth rider to win all three grand tours in France, Spain and Italy.

Nibali outlasted French riders Jean-Christophe Peraud and Thibaut Pinot by 7:52 and 8:24, respectively, to claim the overall crown. He’s the 10th Italian man ever to win the race. German Marcel Kittel won the final stage, which is largely considered a leisurely victory lap.

Inclement weather and tougher stages built around shorter and steeper climbs up narrow roads made this one of the most difficult races in the recent history of the Tour de France. Multiple contenders were eliminated from the race because of injuries.

Great Britain’s Chris Froome, who won the 2013 Tour de France, was knocked out after three crashes. Three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador was also eliminated when he broke his leg after hitting a sinkhole earlier in the race.

The 29-year-old Nibali won four individual stages of the tour, including three mountain stages. He wore the yellow jersey as the race’s overall leader for 19 out of 21 stages.

Final overall results for the race, including a stage-by-stage breakdown, can be found here.
