Rohan Dennis will be the first rider to wear the Maillot Jaune at the 2015 Tour de France after winning the Stage 1 individual time trial Saturday, and setting a time trial speed record in the process. The 25-year-old became the seventh Australian to wear the yellow jersey. He had a dominant ride -- beating time trial specialists Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara by five and six seconds, respectively, is a massive accomplishment.
2015 Tour de France results and standings, Stage 1: Rohan Dennis wins time trial to take yellow jersey
Rohan Dennis set a Tour de France speed record while winning the yellow jersey during Stage 1.
Dennis covered the 13.8-kilometer course in 14 minutes and 56 seconds, giving him an average speed of 55.446 kilometers per hour. The previous Tour de France speed record was set in 1994 when Chris Boardman averaged 55.2 kilometers per hour during a 7.2-kilometer prologue in Lille.
The biggest general classification favorites were far off the top 10, but they did accomplish a lot. Nairo Quintana Rojas, hardly a time trialist, should be ecstatic with his time of 15:57, a little more than a minute off the lead. American Tejay van Garderen (Dennis’ BMC Racing teammate) also had a good ride, checking in at 15:38. Defending Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali was just behind him at 15:39.
Alberto Contador (15:54) and Chris Froome (15:46) will be disappointed. Among the riders contending to stand on the final podium in Paris, those two were expected to gain the most time in the time trial. The fact that they struggled could be an early blow to their confidence.
