Manchester United lose Ander Herrera to broken rib

Laurence Griffiths

Not much has gone right for Manchester United so far this season, but one of the brightest parts of the new campaign has been the form of Ander Herrera. Brought in from Athletic Bilbao a year after ‘imposters’ scuppered a deadline day transfer, the midfielder has quickly established himself as a vital -- if unheralded -- presence in the United side.

And now he has a broken rib:

The good news is that there’s an international break coming up and the recovery time for a rib fracture is measured in weeks, not months. The bad news is that there are several key matches which Herrera looks in some doubt for. He’s certainly going to be out for Everton’s visit to Old Trafford this weekend, and the three-week recovery puts him in some doubt for United’s home match against league leaders Chelsea.

In between? Michael Carrick time, I guess?
