Waiver Wire Alert: Time to pick up Ed Davis, Amir Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas

With Andrea Bargnani out for the foreseeable future, it’s time to buy stock in Ed Davis and Amir Johnson.

USA TODAY Sports

Wednesday night the Raptors played with eight healthy bodies, with Andrea Bargnani (elbow), Kyle Lowry (triceps), Linas Kleiza (knee), Landry Fields (elbow) and Amir Johnson (suspension) among those who were out.

This, in turn, opened the door for Ed Davis, Jose Calderon and Jonas Valanciunas to get more burn against the Brooklyn Nets.

Davis, who I’ve probably added and dropped a half-dozen times already, was the big winner last night. He got off to a hot start early and really showed a great combination of skill, size and athleticism on his way to scoring 24 points with 12 rebounds and three steals in 45 minutes. Right now, yes, he is a must-own. With Bargnani out, Davis is going to pick up some serious run.

Now, I know that Amir Johnson will return to action this weekend from his one-game suspension, but there’s certainly room to play both, rotating in Davis, Johnson and Valanciunas.

I do think, and always have, that Davis is the best of the bunch, with greater potential. I know Valanciunas has some hefty upside, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see his minutes remain limited, in a sense. Davis played 45 minutes against the Nets! Valanciunas, just 26.

If I had to rank the three I would go: Davis, Valanciunas then Johnson. That's not quite for rest of season, but until Bargnani returns. Once that happens, we can reassess.

As for Calderon, he is absolutely a must-own until Lowry returns, which could be up to two weeks from now.
