A lingering foot injury will reportedly keep San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates on the sidelines for this Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Antonio Gates Status Update: Out With Foot Injury, According To Report
The seven-time Pro Bowler missed six of the final eight games of the 2010 season with foot injuries that ultimately landed Gates on injured reserve for the first time in his eight-year career. Gates also battled a foot injury during the 2008 season.
Gates caught eight passes for 74 yards in the Chargers' season-opening win over the Minnesota Vikings, but the New England Patriots double covered Gates throughout last week's 35-21 loss, effectively removing him from the offense. Gates was held out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday, and made an early exit from an attempt to practice on Friday.
According to a report from Pro Football Talk, Gates' foot injury will keep him on the sideline. If the report is correct, veteran Randy McMichael will be asked to step up in a starting role. McMichael has four receptions for 26 yards on the season.
