As we reported earlier today, Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson is active for the Bengals despite being the subject of an on-going drug investigation. The Bengals released the following statement:
Jerome Simpson Status: Bengals Receiver Active, Not Starting
“Jerome Simpson returned to team activites Friday afternoon and after evaluating his readiness, the coaching staff has determined he will be active for today’s game. Jerome’s legal situation with regards to events of the past week remains completely unresolved and the Bengals believe it is not appropriate to act on any presumption of what may transpire.”
While the team appears to be giving Simpson the benefit of the doubt, head coach Marvin Lewis decided against giving him today’s start; instead, Andre Caldwell gets the nod, according to the team’s official site.
Simpson has four passes in each of the Bengals’ first two games, going for a monster 136 yards last week against the Broncos. Caldwell, meanwhile, has combined for just three catches for 27 yards. Don’t be surprised if Simpson is the more productive of the two, even if he’s not technically on the field for the first play of the game.
