Rory McIlroy, who had the opportunity to pass Tiger Woods for the world’s No. 3 ranking, fell to Ben Crane eight and seven in the second round of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship. It was the second worst loss in the history of the tournament, falling just short of Tiger Woods’ nine and eight defeat over Steven Ames five years ago.

McIlroy trailed from the start. Crane, ranked No. 38 in the world, steadily increased his lead throughout the round. After winning the first hole, Crane was able to take three of the next six holes, then proceeded to win the final four holes, ending with McIlroy conceding after he failed to reach the green. Crane’s 5-under 31 was the best front nine so far today.
In two rounds of match play, Crane has only given up one hole, while winning 13. Crane will play Miguel Angel Jimenez, who defeated Ryan Palmer, in the round of sixteen.
