On Saturday, Steve Stricker hit a pair of eagles, and he needed them both to hold off his increasingly stiff competition. Entering the final round of the Memorial Tournament, Stricker holds a three-stroke advantage on the leaderboard.
The Memorial Tournament, Round 3 Leaderboard: Steve Stricker Eagles Twice To Preserve Lead
Stricker opened his third round by shooting 5-under on the front nine, including those two eagles. He shot a decidedly unspectacular 2-over on the back nine, but it was good enough to carry his lead into Sunday. Stricker, age 44, is looking to win the 10th PGA Tour event of his career.
His competition is within striking distance, however. Jonathan Byrd stands three strokes off the pace after a 3-under Saturday. After hitting seven birdies in a nine-hole span, Matt Kuchar is tied for third. Mark Wilson has ascended to a tie for fifth after a 6-under day which included an eagle.
Here is how the Memorial Tournament leaderboard looks entering Round 4:
1. Steve Stricker (-12)
2. Jonathan Byrd (-9)
T3. Matt Kuchar (-8)
T3. Brandt Jobe
T5. Mark Wilson (-7)
T5. Shaun Micheel
T5. Rory McIlroy
8. Six tied (-6)
