For a large chunk of the last decade, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald have been two of the best British golfers in the world and two of the best hopes for a golfer from the Home Nations to take home a British Open title. Donald is currently the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, while Lee Westwood sits at No. 2. The latter player is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished golfers never to win a major. So, the pressure should be higher than ever, right?
British Open 2011: Rory McIlroy’s Notoriety Takes Pressure Off Lee Westwood, Luke Donald
Wrong. Thanks to Rory McIlroy’s charisma and 2011 U.S. Open championship, the young Northern Irishman is getting most of the media attention in the build-up to the 2011 British Open. The relative lack of attention compared to years passed has Westwood and Donald, Englishmen who are the top two ranked golfers in the world, somehow flying a tiny bit under the radar.
Though Donald’s press coverage hasn’t been close to McIlroy’s, his 19-under finish in 54 holes at the Scottish Open has him at least in second place, as far as hype goes. Rob Hodgetts of the BBC explains:
Donald says McIlroy's US Open win means he is a bit more under radar even though he world no.1, but Scottish Open win changed things a bit.
What about Lee Westwood? According to an article over at the BBC, he’s a confident fellow. And why shouldn’t he be? He’s the No. 2 golfer in the world, he keeps finishing in the top five in majors, and for once in his life, he’s only the third most popular (and most scrutinized) British golfer in the world.
All eyes will be on Rory McIlroy this week at Royal St. Georges, which is just fine with Westwood and Donald.
