Sunshine and a light breeze greeted golfers on Monday as the practiced for the 2011 British Open at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England. Perhaps thinking themselves lucky, they were brought back to reality on Tuesday when the sky turned overcast and wind gusted to more than 30 mph.

The weather forecast for Thursday and Friday call for partly cloudy conditions and high 60’s temperatures, providing a brief respite from the tough stuff. Then Saturday will kick in some good old-fashioned English rain
The wind and rain of the British Open has plagued some the best golfers to ever step up to the tee. In 2002, bitter, wind-lashed rain were a big part of Colin Montgomerie’s dreadful 84 a day after shooting 64. Last year’s open was rain-drenched as well and contributed to Rory McIlroy’s collapse.
World No. 1 Luke Donald knows what to expect and that’s the unexpected.
“You don’t really know what you’re going to get,” Luke Donald, the world’s top-ranked player, said after his practice round. “That’s the nature of links.”
