The 2011 British Open is underway from Royal St. George’s in England, and, for the moment, it feels like the 2003 British Open, the last to be played at Royal St. George’s. Blame Thomas Bjorn for that: his run to the top of the British Open leaderboard feels familiar.
2011 British Open Leaderboard Scores: Thomas Bjorn Leading, Rory McIlroy Struggling
Bjorn has played well in the blustery conditions this Thursday, getting to 3-under through 12 holes for a one-shot lead on Mark Calcavecchia and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Bjorn has made four birdies, three on the front nine, to one bogey, and has been managing the high winds better than any other player.
Bjorn was also in contention throughout the 2003 Open Championship, leading after 54 holes and finishing one stroke back of winner Ben Curtis. Bjorn never played a round in 3-under in 2003, however.
Beyond the top of the leaderboard, the world’s newest golfing star is starting his 2011 British Open a bit more fitfully: Rory McIlroy is 2-over through his first six holes.
McIlroy has struggled with his touch on the green, bogeying two of his first three holes. He’s far from out of the 2011 British Open, but it certainly doesn’t seem like he will repeat the runaway victory he scored at the 2011 U.S. Open.
