2011 British Open Leaderboard Results: Miguel Angel Jimenez Pulls Within One Stroke Of Thomas Bjorn

Early in the first round of the 2011 British Open, it looked like Thomas Bjorn might have a large lead on the field. Miguel Angel Jimenez made sure that wasn’t going to happen, climbing the British Open leaderboard with a strong opening round of his own.

Jimenez shot a bogey-free 4-under 66 at Royal St. George’s, sprinkling four birdies (none consecutive) over his 18 holes to pull within one shot of Bjorn after the first round of the Open Championship. Neither Bjorn nor Jimenez has won a major championship, despite both having numerous top-10 finishes in majors and sterling European Tour careers.

A bit further behind them, though, there are a few players with major championship pedigrees: Mark Calcavecchia, the 1989 British Open champion, began with a 1-under 69, and Stewart Cink’s even-par 70 keeps him in shouting distance of the leaders.

Maybe the day’s biggest surprise so far is English unknown Simon Dyson, whose 2-under 68 could have been a 67 if not for an 18th hole bogey. Dyson has only made five career cuts in majors.
