Rory McIlroy Ends British Open 2011 First Round At 1-Over

Rory McIlroy was the odds-on favorite to win the British Open, but the Northern Ireland native didn’t have a first round to remember. He obviously still has a chance to win it, but finishing 1-over on Day 1 certainly isn’t what his fans had hoped to see.

McIlroy struggled with his touch on the green, bogeying two of his first three holes and three total, and even struggled a bit with his putting as he was able to only pick up two birdies in the first round due to a couple of near-misses.

With about one-fourth of the field through the first round at Royal St. George’s Golf Course, McIlroy finds himself in a tie for 34th place with three rounds to go.

If McIlroy is able to comeback, he will have to hope that current leader Thomas Bjorn cools off a bit as the golfer from Denmark finished the first round at 5-under.
